School Related Meeting

The School Advisory Council Meeting that I attended was on April 8th at 2:30pm and was located at DeBary Elementary School in the Media Center. Those in attendance were the Principal, Mr. Rawlings, Mrs. St. John, Mrs. Moorhead and Ms. Leach, as well as six other teachers. There were no presentations during the meeting.

Mr. Rawlings-FCAT Testing and Legislative Awareness
Mrs. St. John - SAC Elections
Mrs. Moorhead - PTA News
Ms. Leach - DeBary Parks and Recreations

School Budget- All staff in attendance

Most of the teachers in attendance asked whether they were going to be reimbursed over the amount they're going to spent on supplies per class. School supplies seem to be a pretty sore subject amoung the teachers. I feel as if its not the responsibility of the teacher to supply students with these supplies but that of the parent. When I was growing up in the 80's and 90's my parents were held responsible for making sure we all had our school supplies. I thought that was the purpose of the supply list sent to stores like WalMart and Target. I understand that students do go through most of those supplies before school year ends, but a possible seperate budget within the school's budget could be made. I know teachers get reimbursed for the purchase of classroom supplies but with everything else teachers have to do buying supplies shouldn't be one of them. Besides that there's a limit to what they can get reimbured and I know personally some teachers that spend over that allotted amount. Teachers were thinking of possibly getting gift cards for one another for supplies. Not sure if that is the way to go but time will tell.

DeBary Parks and Recreation is offering a summer program for children from 7:30am to 5:30pm from June 14 - August 6 at $60/wk. At the town hall there will Yoga classes for adults for $8.00/day and Dance for Health is offering classes from 11:00am-12:00pm on Thursdays for FREE! They will be performing dance routines from showtunes. There is a Department Brochure now available for those interested.

Budget - Requests from school were:

Ms. Morris - Scholastic News and Time for Kids subscription for next year (Non-Fiction) for
25 subscriptions at $210.25 total.

5th Grade Teachers - Asking for help for t-shirts and decorations for 5th grade student graduation celebration. the budget is $500 for 350 students which according to teachers isn't enough to make it memorable. The 5th grade teachers are asking for $250 from A+ Funds to cover this expenditure.

Ms. Smith - She suggested to pay for 5th grade celebration and Scholastic News subscriptions from SAC Budget which has a $1301.46 balance left instead of using A+ School Recognition Funds. Since SAC budget does not roll-over on to the following year, she figured this would be a good way to spend the SAC budget that has to be spent before the end of the school year.

Mrs. St. John asked for motion to be passed on the subject of spending SAC budget money as suggested by Ms. Smith and all in attendance agreed on this. First though the principal must speack to school officials to make sure that this is even possible. But, reassured teachers he didn't see no reason why they would not.
